What is a Frittata
It is an egg-based Italian dish similar to a crustless quiche, enriched with additional ingredients such as meats, cheeses or vegetables. The word frittata is Italian and roughly translates to “fried.” In this post, I will explain how I make a simple and easy Spinach Mushrooms Frittata.
What can you use to make a Frittata
What is great about the frittata is that you can use pretty much any ingredients that you like. Frittata is a great vessel to clean your fridge from old vegetables or leftovers of meat. Just add some cheese to the mix and voilà, you got yourself a frittata! For example if you don’t have mushrooms, replaced them with bell peppers or fried eggplants. Also, another great combination, is peas, onions, bacon and fresh tomatoes on top! You see the sky is the limit, go wild and discover the beauty of Frittata!
How to make Spinach Mushrooms Frittata
First, preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F), and place the rack in the middle position. After, butter an 8-10 inches cast iron skillet or a baking dish. Set aside. Secondly, combine eggs and milk in a large bowl and with a whisk mix carefully. Add the cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Place the bowl aside.
Now, cut and cook the bacon and set aside. Brown the onions, the garlic and the mushrooms in the fat from the bacon over medium heat. Set aside. Into the same skillet cook the spinach until there is no more water at the bottom of the skillet. After the spinach is cooked, mix them with the bacon, the onions, and the mushrooms. Now, pour the mushroom mixture into the egg mixture. Stir well and pour into a baking dish. Bake the frittata for about 25 minutes or until lightly browned and puffed. This mushroom spinach frittata is perfect with a green salad or even with a Rösti!
